The Birdman Rally in Japan is an annual event where aircraft compete by
launching off a tall peer over a lake and trying to cover the most distance before
splashing down. The two main categories are gliders and human powered propeller
driven. But, there have been
some years where human powered helicopters have competed with each other. Only 2001, 2002 and 2003 have results
for a helicopter category. In 2004, the helicopter portion was removed from that
year's lineup as well as future years due to pilot
safety concerns (Translation).
I guess the aircraft could not reliably clear the peer. Based on the photos gathered so far, the helicopters
were launched from the tall peer just like the other aircraft. Under these
conditions, the times recorded do not qualify under the rules for the Sikorsky
Prize. The results were as follows:

Two helicopters waiting to go up the ramp in 2002.

any photos PLEASE contact me! 8D
