Project: Phoenix

The Phoenix project was started in 1999 by students at the University of Michigan and was still active as of June 2005. For more information see their website. They are looking for sponsors. If this is something you could do, please contact them.

The project has produced two reports/presentations:

Naveen Rajan has some more information and CAD images on his website. Note that his text describes a transition from a mechanical drive-train to an electrical one. The pilot/engine drives a generator. The electricity is fed to 2 electric motors, one for each rotor. The Competition Coordinator for the Sikorsky Prize has approved this innovation so we can look forward to seeing it in action.

2006-08-15: The team has been working on completing its prototype to be powered by a motor.

Phoenix prototype circa 2000.
